What to wear to your maternity photoshoot

So you've booked a maternity session, or you're thinking about it. Congratulations! Having a maternity session is such a special way to remember your body in this ever changing time. Still, it can be tricky to know what to wear and picking the right outfit is key to making sure you feel beautiful, comfortable and confident.

Booking a maternity photoshoot with me means you'll have access to my client wardrobe, where I have a range of dresses from comfy knits to more elaborate lace gowns. But some people like to choose and source their own outfits and I have lots of tips and suggestions!

Flowing and Feminine Styles

One of my favourite looks for a maternity session is to go all out on beautiful, flowing gowns. If you can't get dressed up for this, then when can you?

  • Maxi dresses are so flattering in a maternity session, they drape and cover your body in a beautiful and elegant way.

  • Empire Waist dresses are a brilliant way to accentuate your bump. They pull in right under your bust and then drape over the rest of your body. A comfortable, flattering option that will make you feel very confident.

  • Lace dresses add a touch of boho and really help to give your bump a good outline. They're feminine and floaty and make a real style statement. I have a couple of lace options available to borrow.

More casual options

Lots of people prefer to opt for a more casual option and there are lots of looks you can pull together yourself at home.

  • You can't go wrong with jeans a top. Either an open shirt or cardigan for some texture. You could wear your favourite jumper and roll it up a bit. It doesn't even matter if your jeans aren't quite meeting in the middle at the moment - leaving them open enhances this casual and confident look.

  • You could still wear a dress but aim for a more casual approach. Knitted dresses are lovely and stretchy over your bump. The texture adds another layer to your photos and most importantly - they're comfy.

    The Importance of Comfort

Feeling comfortable during your maternity shoot is essential. Tight or restrictive clothing can detract from your experience. Choose:

  • Breathable Fabrics – Soft knits, cotton, and chiffon provide comfort while looking elegant.

  • Stretchy and Flowing Gowns – These allow movement and ensure you feel at ease.

  • Seamless Undergarments – Nude or seamless options help prevent visible lines under flowing dresses.

Final Tips for Your Maternity Shoot

  • Choose outfits that reflect your personality and make you feel beautiful.

  • Think about your location – light fabrics suit beach or field settings, while earthy tones blend well with woodlands.

  • Bring a sentimental accessory, like a special necklace or bracelet, to add a personal touch.

By choosing the right outfit and embracing a soft, flowing, and comfortable style, your maternity shoot will be a truly magical experience. Whether selecting a dress from my client wardrobe or bringing your own, the goal is to feel beautiful and confident while celebrating this incredible journey.
